Appealed:
Taking a court decision to a higher court. People can ask a new judge to review the case and protect their rights

a story or book written about a person by another person

Civil disobedience:
using nonviolent, peaceful actions to try to change laws
Civil rights:
the rights of everyone to have freedom and equality in society. Some civil rights include free speech, voting, education, and the right to participate in society freely.
Discrimination:
the act of treating people unfairly because of their appearance, background or actions
Equality:
the idea that everyone is treated the same and has the same opportunities
Fairness:
treating people the same without favoring one person or group over another
Legacy:
something of importance passed down to future generations
Mentor:
someone who guides and supports another person to help them succeed
Segregation:
the act of separating people into groups, often by race
Supreme Court:
the highest and most powerful court in the United States. The Supreme Court helps to explain what the Constitution means by interpreting the law.
