Engineering Social Change for a Better Society

Engineering Social Change for a Better Society

The world renowned and Nobel Prize winning author Toni Morrison famously said, “When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab-bag candy game." Essentially, this is what a “social engineer” is: a person who uses their position and knowledge to uplift others for the greater good of the world.

Thurgood Marshall, and other civil rights leaders, chose to be social engineers. They used their positions and knowledge to change society into a better place. Thurgood Marshall’s legacy as a civil rights attorney and U.S. Supreme Court judge is specifically influenced by Charles Hamilton Houston’s idea that lawyers were “either a social engineer or a parasite on society.”
